Through the use of traditional, historical, and stereotypical feminine motifs, Abigail Mirro develops her images as a form of empowerment by embracing, and therefore challenging, societal expectations. Her aim is to decentralize male influence and reclaim space for a more diverse narrative on femininity. These works contain our present, past, and future. Abigail is inspired by poetry, historical figures, and fashion from throughout the indefinite oppression of the feminine.
Abigail’s current work is focused on the medium of printmaking. Using varied stone lithographic techniques, she translates her delicate hand drawings into her unique style of representation. Her work navigates the duality of feminine stereotypes through the softness and harshness of stone processes. Ultra -feminine symbols are placed alongside those of defiance to create a disparity that highlights the tension between supple and strength. There is a contrast between the lithe drawing practice and the heavy, physical work of producing the print itself. The audience is prompted to reflect on the long-held perceptions of weakness versus the inherent power within vulnerability. They are encouraged to reconsider what it truly means to embody strength as a woman.

Based in Illinois, the east coast artist received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Herron, Indiana University Indianapolis in 2023 with a focus in printmaking. Currently, she is a Master of Fine Arts candidate at Northern Illinois University.
